Wrightsville Beach, NC to New River inlet area, Day 15

Wrightsville Beach was a great anchorage. We weighed anchor early enough to make the scheduled bridge opening at 8 AM that was about 2 1/2 miles away and then had 5 miles to the next low bridge opening but we got there 10 minutes too late and had to hover for 20 minutes with a sailboat and 3 other cruisers.
All in line to go through the swing bridge

We continued traveling behind barrier islands of Top Sail, Surf City, Hampstead in the ICW, passing a couple of channel markers topped with osprey nests and babies.

We chose to anchor tonight in Mile Hammock Bay which is a basin dug by the military for use with Camp LeJeune that allows cruisers to use as a safe anchorage. Even though we aren't allowed to go to shore here, there was plenty of FREE entertainment with the military helicopters and their Osprey aircraft!
